Notes
a. Note:   Josephine Reno was 8 years old when her mother died in the flu epidemic of 1918. She and her sisters were brought up by an adoring father and a series of housekeepers in Saylesville Rhode Island.
All three girls went away to school - to House in the Pines in Norton Massachusetts (not that far from Saylesville). From there, Josephine attended Elmira College. Hazel used to say that Joey was the "upstart rebel of the sisters." She evidently liked boarding school and made friends with whom she kept in contact throughout her life.
She met my father (Kenneth) at a picnic at Snow Inn in Harwichport in 1926 when they were both 16. The Reno's were spending the summer in a rented cottage near the Harwichport golf course, and he was at the Brett camp on Long Pond. They married in 1932. See Kenneth Brett for details of their life together which prospered until 1990 at her death.
She was a devotee of classical music and a good pianist. (She studied at the Boston Conservatory after her marriage). Her passion, however, was gardening; she became involved with garden clubs in each of the many places she lived, taught and won prizes in flower arranging. Her "wildflower walk" (here at the camp where I live) attracted enthusiasts from all over the world and was the subject of a Channel 2 (PBS) documentary.
