I believe my ggggrandmother to be the second wife of Francis Hulet and to have born him 5 children. Records. I have that he migrated to Missouri after Percy died and married my ggggrandmother Flora Matilda ???? (probably in Missouri). Some early Mormon records say that Schuyler traveled with his Aunt Sally Hulet Whiting to Missouri because his Mother died. Francis probably came at the same time with all the Hulet family that had converted to the Mormon faith but his sister took care of his son since Percy had died. Francis shows up in Illinois on the 1840 census with what I believe to be my ggggrandmother, Schuyler, and her girls. The reason I believe that Francis Hulet married a 2nd time after 1st wife Percy died is because I have copies of the records from the family bible of my great great Grandmother Sarah Louise Smith. She lists Francis Hulet b 1794 d 1846. Then she lists her Mother Flora Matilda, 4 stepsisters and 1 stepbrother. Flora Matilda Hulet married again between 1846 and 1850 because she shows up in Corpus Christi, Texas as Flora Matilda Smith, wife of John Smith and has 2 more daughters. My gggrandmother is Sarah Louise Smith, Flora Matilda's daughter by John Smith. The older stepsiblings were born 2 in Clay County Missouri, 1 in Caldwell County Missouri, 1 in Hancock County, Illinois, and 1 in Iowa. So, these children look to be born on the Mormon Trail. John Smith is not listed in the bible but I have some property documents that lists Flora Matilda Smith, wife of John Smith as owner of property in Corpus Christy, Texas. It is a mystery why John is not listed in the bible since he seems to be Sarah Louise's father. It seems odd that Flora Matilda shows up in Texas after Francis Hulet died but perhaps she and her family deserted the church after that horrible winter and spring of 1846/47 when so many of the people died. Since I do not know her maiden name, I have yet to figure out how she ended up in Texas or when she married Francis. I do not believe she followed Wight to Texas because he never settled near Corpus. ~Patty DUANE WRIGHT This is my cousins and my opinion on the 1840 census. The 1 in the under 5 male column has a horizontal line through it and the 1 in the Under 5 female was changed to a 2. The family total remains 6. Using this interpretation of the marks on the data, the Male Under 5 column count is 16 and the Female column count is 19, as listed at the bottom of the respective columns. Thus censes provides the following Hancock County, Illinois Male age 10-15: 1 Schuyler (child by 1st wife) Male age 30-40: 1 Francis Female age Under 5: 2 Mary and Laura Female age 5-10: 1 Percy Female age 30-40: 1 Flora Matilda Total: 6 Occupation Manufacturing and Trade The 1850 census in Corpus Christi has the Hulet children listed as Smiths. The 1850 and 1860 census are as follows. 1850 US Federal Census Texas, Nueces, Corpus Christi Image 2 of 10 38/38 Matilda Smith 35 F 500 Connecticut Percy 16 F Missouri Mary 14 F Missouri Laura 12 F Missouri Cordelia 11 F Illinois Sampson 8 M Iowa Territory *According to family bible of Juan & Sarah Louise all of these children are Hulets. 1860 US Federal Census Texas, Nueces, Corpus Christi Image 5 of 34 21/21 Flora M Smith 49 F 400 200 Connecticut Sarah 7 F Texas Att School Lucy 2 F Texas By 1860, Percy and Mary are married and Sampson has died. By 1880 Sarah Louise (My gggrandmother) is married. We have no idea what happened to Laura, Cordelia or Lucy. Cordelia may have married a Mcdermott but that is just guess work and, I am hesitant to guess at things. I like to have proof. There was a McDermott who wrote for information on the pension record of Francis's father in the 1930's and there is a Cordelia McDermott with husband M Mcdermott on the 1870 census in Texas but that is the only time I found a Cordelia after 1850 that fits her. There are also some McDermott's in Colorado with females named Cordelia on later census but they are not the correct age, so I just don't know. Even tho Flora Matilda would seem to be Mormon, I rarely take the stuff I find on the LDS site at face value. I always get the records to prove my case since many of the records there are incorrect. However, they do give clues as to where to look. It is probable that Flora Matilda left the church after Francis died and best guess is John Smith is a soilder stationed at Corpus Christy. I doubt that he was ever a Mormon convert. I believe him to have had a first wife named Elizabeth in Corpus Christi. But, I am still no closer to finding Flora Matilda's maiden name. Her family was probably converted to the church when she was young and she probably converted as well. But, why she showed up in Corpus is a real mystery. ~Patty 1 Birth: 3 MAR 1802 in Lee, Berkshire, Massachusetts Death: 17 MAR 1882 Census: 1840 , Hancock, Illinois Note: 1840 United States Federal Census > Illinois > Hancock > Not Stated extracted by Vern Taylor 2007 Francis HULET males 1 0 1 0 0 1 females 1 1 0 0 1 male age 30-40 Francis Hulet b. 1802 age 38 female age 20-30 (wife*)(not mother of Schuyler) b. 1820-30 (or column placement error) male age 10-15 Schuyler Hulett b. 1826 age 14 (birth gap of 9 years suggests different mothers) female age 5-10 daughter b. 1830-35 abt 1835 male under 5 son b. 1836-40 abt 1837 female under 5 daughter b. 1836-40 abt 1839 *DUANE WRIGHT lists Flora Matilda, 2nd wife.
