Note: SOLDIERS ORPHANS' HOME Before the war closed, Mrs. Harvey contemplated establishing a "Soldiers" Orphans' Home. When it closed, she obtained form the General Government the gift of the additions it had made to the Farwell Mansion at Madison for the United States Harvey Hospital, and opened such an institution for orphans in that edifice on January 1st, 1866. In March, by action of the Legislature and Governor Fairchild, it became a Benevolent Institution of the State. In Sept. 1866, more than two hundred were there, in good health, and enjoying the benefit of one of the best elementary schools in Wisconsin. There are at least about 8,000 orphan children of soldiers in the State. The object of the institution is to provide for the education and support of orphans, especially of soldiers and marines. New London Newspaper - April 23, 1937 (P76-7797) Mrs. Mary McCaslin 81, resident of New London for past 62 years died at 5:30 Friday morning at home of Victor Thomas on Beacon Avenue. Mrs. McCaslin had been in failing health for past six months and suffered a stroke six days prior to her death. Born in Janesville 6-28-1855, Mary Connors, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Connors resided there during her childhood. Her marriage to Nathan McCaslin took place in January 1874 at Albany, Wi. The couple came to New London in June of the same year. She was a active member of Methodist Church for many years and Woman's Relief Corp until failing health made it impossible for her to take active part. Survivors: 2 daughter, Mrs. Victor Thomas, New London; Mrs. Will Thomas, Cornell; 1 son, Steve of Gary, Indiana; 1 brother, Steve of Albany, and 1 sister, Rose Reece of Oshkosh; 1 granddaughter, Mrs. Herbert Aeppler of Wauwatosa; 1 grandson, Victor and 1 great granddaughter, Oerian Aeppler. 3 stepchildren, George McCaslin, Evansville; Mrs. Lily McGill, Appleton; and Leon McCaslin of Milwaukee. Funeral services held Monday at 2 o'clock from Thomas residence with Rev. RR Holliday of Methodist Church officiating. Interment in Hill Cemetery. Card of Thanks; We wish to express thanks to Rev.
