Notes
a. Note:   SOLDIERS ORPHANS' HOME Before the war closed, Mrs. Harvey contemplated establishing a "Soldiers" Orphans' Home. When it closed, she obtained form the General Government the gift of the additions it had made to the Farwell Mansion at Madison for the United States Harvey Hospital, and opened such an institution for orphans in that edifice on January 1st, 1866. In March, by action of the Legislature and Governor Fairchild, it became a Benevolent Institution of the State. In Sept. 1866, more than two hundred were there, in good health, and enjoying the benefit of one of the best elementary schools in Wisconsin. There are at least about 8,000 orphan children of soldiers in the State. The object of the institution is to provide for the education and support of orphans, especially of soldiers and marines. The children of James Conners are listed here.
