Notes
a. Note:   Notes as told to Wanda Martin Brown by her Grandmother Faye Estelle Brown Hoven in summer of 1985.
Eliza Searles had poor health - stomach trouble. Doctors thought she would be better here in America. She never ate white bread with yeast. She had a carpenter brother here after Chicago fire who told them to come over to this great place. They came in 1884.
This couple came to Aberdeen, South Dakota by train from New York (end to train line). They drove team of oxen and covered wagon to homestead close to Bangor, South Dakota. They had left huge brick home with fireplaces in each room and beautiful furniture and indoor plumbing. Came to sod shack that had tarpaper roof. During the first rain storm, the tar paper ripped. Grandma Smithers tried to patch roof with pure linen sheets while Grandpa Smithers walked up and down with umbrella open and didn't try to help.
They stayed on the homestead for the tree years it took to "prove up" the homestead, plus 5 or 6 more years. In time they lived in Bowdle, South Dakota. Grandpa Smithers had a huge garden and he did maintenance work at the school.
They later moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota where they lived in a lovely big home. He was supposed to take tickets at a theatre owned by his son, Caleb. He would have Faye take the tickets each time the movies changed so he could watch it from the front row.
They never lost their English accent. He always had a big dog which was chained to the leg of the table.
Grandma Smithers died in Aberdeen in Abt 1914. He went to California to live with Agnes and Seagle. He died in California in Sept. 1928.
