Note: EMAILS: To: [email protected] Date: Sun, 2 May 2004 20:27:23 -0500 Subject: MOSS, BENJAMIN F. From: "Lorraine Hess" <[email protected]> ---------------------------------------------------------------- I own part of the original tract of land owned by John Anderson Moss (b:3Mar1767 Louisa County,VA) near Concord, IL and where I continued to live today. I grew up with the descendants of John Moss, living only a 1/2 mile from them. Thought this info might be of some use or interest to you. I still am unable to find out who the parents of John Anderson Moss were, but there is a statement on p.230 of the Family History of Morgan County 1976 which says "They were both (John Anderson Moss & Nancy Galloway) born in Virginia and traced ancestry to England and Wales respectively." I have not been able to trace it myself, but I guess someone has, whoever made that statement to the representative of the Morgan County Historical and Genealogy Society based in Jacksonville, IL where I live. I am attaching p.230 and p.231 of the Family History of Morgan County (Illinois) 1976 in which various descendants of John Anderson and Nancy Galloway are given short biographies.......... I'll send several e-mails with the same type pages as above, and you can visit the MAGA web site http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmaga/index.html and browse the "County Histories" section where these pages are located. --------------------------------------------------- Lorraine Lair Hess 1531 Base Line Road Jacksonville, IL 62650 217-243-2801-home 217-377-8535-cell 217-243-9351-fax Researching names: Lair, Willis, Swearngin, Schall, Meyer, Hess, Heaton, Gordon, Zulauf, Yeck. Moss EMAILS: To:[email protected] From: [email protected] ; George and June Moss Date: Sun, 1 Aug 2004 12:51:03 EDT Subject: John & Nancy Moss - Morgan County, Ill. ******************************************************************** John Moss (to my knowledge) was born in VA the county of Louisa. I do not know where he and Nancy Galloway were married, only that `my family tree' has the children (7) born in So. Carolina. Eldest daughter (child) married in Overton Co., Tenn to James Bradshaw, that family buried in Green Co., KY. The other six moved to Bedford County, Tenn and then all moved to Morgan Co., Ill between 1826 and 1835. Now, (lineage) -Eldest son of J & N Moss was William and he married Rachel Brattain in Bedford Co. and they had 8 children born there, moved to Illinois and they had 9 more children (10 sons/7 daughters)Wm. & Rachel, eldest was John Brattain who married Elizabeth Standley in Morgan Co., Ill. They had a son they named John Anderson Moss (b. 23/7/1857, married Grace Leake. John Anderson Moss (23/7/1857) had an older brother Robert Moss (nmi) who also had a son named John Anderson Moss and he married a lady with the name of Julia Blimling. That is where the difficulty of our John and Nancy gets a wee bit `stirred'. It is very possible that Charity Hughes married our `John' and is the father of `John ' married to Nancy. I have traced the LDS lists and see where `Moss' John was born in 1747 and also `Moss' John was born in 1727. I also have a JOHN MOSS in Conn. in 1639 = 11 children = but I cannot trace the Scotch-Irish down the `Shenandoah River Road' altho I am sure they traveled that route at the behest of the `King George I, II, and III until they could not run any further and helped to drive Cornwallis back to Yorktown. I like to say "it's in the book" of Revolution Days, from 1705 to 1785. I do have the `family tree' from John and Nancy, some (like Jonathan) I cannot trace as yet . But, heck, I'm only 83 going on 21. Ask and I can send you a copy of the info I have garnered about our kinfolk from J & N (Galloway) Moss. It has some of the colonial names, the Rev War names, the 1812 War, the Civil War, all of our Nations background. Me, still have 12 pieces of shrapnel from eastern France of WW II, carry a DAV card, all of the above ! ! ! Yes, I am one of that Clan. BIOGRAPHY: William Moss, a native of one of the Carolinas, was the son of John and Nancy (Galloway) Moss, who traced their ancestry to England and Wales. John Moss was a farmer by occupation, and coming to Illinois in 1829, accompanied by his wife, joined his son, William, who had emigrated to this locality several years before, being the first member of the family to remove from their native State. Grandfather Moss and his wife spent the remainder of their days in this county, and lived to the advanced ages of ninety-one and ninety-four years respectively. They were upright in their lives, and members of the Regular Baptist Church. Grandfather Moss and his estimable wife were the parents of seven children, four sons and three daughters, of whom William, the father of our subject, was the eldest born. Most of them lived to mature years, and were married. William was reared in South Carolina and Middle Tennessee, and when reaching man's estate, was united in marriage with Miss Rachel Bratton. This lady was the daughter of Benjamin F. and Mary (Hill) Bratton, who were natives of one of the Carolinas, and were early settlers of Middle Tennessee. Later, like the Moss family, they came, about 1817, to Illinois Territory, the year prior to its admission into the Union as a State. They located in Bond County, where the death of Mr. Bratton occurred a few years later. Subsequently his wife came to this county, and here spent her last days; both lived to be quite well advanced in years. William Moss, after his marriage, settled on a farm in Tennessee, where he lived until after becoming the father of eight children. He then, in 1827, came with his family to this county, locating in township16, range 11, where he opened a farm from the wilderness, and built up a comfortable home, upon which both he and his wife spent the remainder of their days. The latter died when only fifty-three years old, but William Moss lived to the advanced age of eighty-two. Their family consisted of seventeen children, ten sons and seven daughters, of whom Benjamin F., our subject, was the fifth child. For a good many years the parents and all the children were living, and nearly all of the latter lived to become men and women. Benjamin F. was but a child when the family came to this county, and he, like his brothers and sisters, although attaining only a limited education, was trained to those habits of industry and principles of honor which made of him an honest man, and a good citizen. ---------------------------------------------------- PORTRAIT & BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF MORGAN AND SCOTT COUNTIES, ILLINOIS Chicago: Chapman Bros., Publishers, 1889. One listed him as John Anderson Moss, the other simply as John Moss. Given the discrepancy I'm a little worried there is a transcription error because of the John Anderson Moss (b. 1857) right above him. Probably too much to hope that someone locally might go look at the tombstone itself. What I've found so far is just a lead, but the most promising one I've seen. I have found a old query regarding a John Moss who married Charity Hughes of Hanover Co., Virginia in 1761. It speculates that this John was the recepient of a land grant in South Carolina for service in the Revolution. Among his children listed is one Anderson Moss, b. 1766. This is from "Moss in Virginia" by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck.
