Note: BURIAL: WILLIAM H. VANCE CEMETERY - Tazewell Co. VA To my knowledge there is no name for this Cemetery, I am calling it the William H. VANCE Cemetery for the following reason. My G,G,G,Grandfather William H. VANCE (Son of Abner & Susannah VANCE) owned a farm on Kents Ridge, in Tazewell Co. Va. William H. VANCE was buried on his farm at Kents Ridge, This Cemetery is up on the hill overlooking the site where his house sat. It is about a five minute walk from the old house site to the Cemetery. The Cemetery is very old, there are a few stones with names and dates on them, and many graves with only fieldstones for markers, and several with no markers at all. I believe that William H. VANCE was buried here in 1853, and I also believe that his wife Nancy is buried here. The Cemetery is in very bad condition, it has grown up so bad that only about the first 20 feet in the front of the Cemetery is accessible. The Cemetery itself is about 100 feet by about 60 feet, it has been fenced, the first 20 feet of the graveyard has been mowed and cleaned up, but the rest is really bad. There may be more stones with names and dates farther back in the Cemetery, but there is no way to see them without cleaning it up. Hopefully I can recruit some help from my brothers and other relatives this fall, and clean it up before it is lost forever. Directions to this Cemetery: From Richlands, Va. Take Kents Ridge Road toward Wardell, go about 1/2 mile out of town and make a right into Hidden Valley Subdivision, go to the top of the hill and bear right at the Y, stay right all the way to the end of the road, when you reach the end of the road the Cemetery is about 100 feet to the left surrounded by pine trees. There is a row of homes about 100 feet in front of the Cemetery. A small dirt road runs between the Cemetery and the homes.
