Notes
a. Note:   e from Col. E Clark which entitled him to 250 acres in the state of Georgia. He is recorded as a private, which agrees with the official records. This would seem to indicate that Joseph Burgess served in the Revolutionary War. However, his certificate was signed by Col. Elijah Clark who was one of a handful of individuals who took advantage of the opportunities and procured thousands of acres for himself by signing certificates and then buying the land from the recipients. The 1794 tax digest seems to bear this out. Joseph Burgess appears in this record in Hancock Co GA but has no taxable assets. Joseph Burgess appears in the 1796 tax record of Hancock Co GA as well.
Joseph Burgess also received land in the 1807 Georgia Land Lottery. On Dec 13 1807, Joseph Burgess and his wife Elizabeth, for the sum of $75.00, sold 202.5 acres, land lot 16 in the 9th District, joining lots #'s 9, 15, 33, 17 on the waters of Woolf Creek to William Mangham, both of Hancock County. (This land was in the new county of Baldwin, now Jones Co GA) The transaction was witnessed by Joel Newsom and Solomon Mangham.
Joseph Burgess was a member of the 14th Regiment of Georgia Militia, Hancock County, Capt Lucas' Company. The Regimental Minutes of the 15th of June 1810 show him being fined $1.00 for failing to appear at the Regimental Muster held on June 5th at Sparta GA. On the 23rd of May 1812, Joseph Burgess, now of Capt Connell's District, is discharged from further military duty, "he being over 45 years of age".
Joseph Burgess disappears from Georgia historical records after this entry. However, a Joseph Burgess appears in the 1820 census of Union Co SC. It is highly likely this is the same Joseph Burgess. John Burgess, who later claims to have been born in Hancock Co GA, appears in the 1820 census of Union Co SC. John Burgess may be a son of Joseph. John Burgess enlisted in Capt Faucett (Fossett) Company at Lipsey's Old Field in Union Co GA in 1814.

On Oct 14 1824, a coroner's "inquisition" was held on one Joseph Burgess who died as a result of being struck on the back of the head with a gun at the hands of George McKnight.
There is no further record of this Joseph Burgess.
Note:   Joseph Burgess first appears in the public record Dec 10 1784 when he received a certificat
