Continued: The Spartanburg Herald, Spartanburg, S. C., April 23 1954 GAFFNEY MAN'S BODY FOUND ON RR TRACK Gaffney -- W. C. Burgess, Sr., of Gaffney was found dead on the Southern Railway tracks here early Thursday morning. Mr. Burgess, retired farmer and night watchman, was apparently hit by a southbound passenger train that passed the Buford Street crossing at 3:15 a. m., officers said. A coroners jury viewed the body but it has not been determined if an inquest will be held. Mr. Burgess lived at 202 Brown Street and was a native of Cherokee County. Funeral services will be held at Shuford-Hatcher Mortuary Friday at 4 p. m. The Revs Louis Wynn and Clarence Hampton will officate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Albert and Ed Burgess, Clarence Wyatt, Niles and Jimmy Pettit, Raymond Keller, B. O. Turner and Ellis Sarratt. Surviving are: three sons, Horace of Blackburg, and J. W. and W. C., Jr., of Gaffney; daughters, Mrs. C. M. Jolly, Mrs. Fred Stroup, Mrs. Jeff Mabry, Mrs. Milford Carter, Mrs. Donald McCraw, and Mrs. Belton Hartsell; four sisters, Mrs.Wofford Kirby, Mrs. Homer Littlejohn, Mrs. Jonah Pruitt, all of Bessemer City, N. C., and Mrs. E. B. Bolin of Gaffney; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
