a. Continued:   Spartanburg Herald, Sep 15 1961 WOUNDED GAFFNEY MAN SUCCUMBS Gaffney -A Gaffney Route 5 man who was shot Aug. 10 during a shotgun duel, died Thursday
at 5 a.m. at Greenville General Hospital. John Thomas (Ed) Boyle, 43, was shot once in the head after Boyle reportedly broke into the
home of Mrs. Ruth Riggs, also Route 5. Cherokee County police arrested Grover H Bright, 70, at the time of the shooting and he was
released on $1000 bond by agreement with the circuit solicitor and Cherokee County police.
Mr. Bright is an uncle of Mrs. Riggs and lives with her in the Corinth community. Police said Boyle went to the Riggs house about 6 .m. the morning of August 10, drinking
and asked to come in and talk to Mrs. Riggs. She refused to let him in and he left. He returned in
about 30 minutes with a shotgun. Boyle cut a screen on the front door and fired the gun one time through the door but it failed
to open, police said. After cutting the other two screens, he finally gained entrance to the house
by climbing through a dining room window. By this time Mrs. Riggs and two young boys had locked themselves into a bathroom with Bright
taking cover behind a refrigerator after arming himself with a shotgun. Boyle spotted Bright and fired one time at him but missed, according to police account. Mr.
Bright then fired one time, striking Boyle in the head and face. Coroner Jack E. Millwood empaneled a jury to review Boyle's body and said an inquest will be
held. No date was set. Mr. Boyle was a member of the Gethsemane Methodist Church and a son of the late Alie and
Lulu Burgess Boyle. Surviving are: three sisters, Misses Polly and Berthenia Boyle and Mrs. Amos Spencer, all of
Gaffney; two brothers, Rochelle Boyle of Gaffney, and Hoyle Boyle of Spartanburg; one son,
John Thomas Boyle of Union. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Corinth Baptist Church by the Revs.
J.C. Dyar, and W. D. Farr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Homer Humphries, Bob Sarter, Leonard Wells, Claude Ray, Brockman Burgess, and Jack Spencer.
