Note: THE GASTONIA DAILY GAZETTE Gastonia, NC Thursday Afternoon, October 14 1926 Bessemer City News Bessemer City, Oct. 14- A most enjoyable affair took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Littlejohn last Sunday when a joint birthday party honoring the anniversaries of Mr. J.B. Burgess, father of Mrs. Littlejohn, and Mr. W.F. Kirby, her brother-in-law. The former was 67 years of age and the latter 38. About 50 relatives and friends were present and a lovely day was spent. At the noon hour the guests were invited to the dining room where a most beautiful basket dinner was served. The table aside from the good things to eat was very pretty with bowls of roses and other autumn flowers. The blessing was invoked by the father in whose honor the party was given. Mr. Burgess' children were all present and were as follows: Mesdames Annie Wyatt and family, Mollie Baldwin (sic) and family, Mr. Junie Burgess and family, Mr. W.C. Burgess and family, all of Gaffney, S.C. Mesdames W. F. Kirby and family, L.H. Littlejohn and family, Irene Pruitt and family, all of Bessemer City. There were a number of grandchildren present and one great grandchild, the small son of Mrs. Alma Barnes of Shelby. GAFFNEY LEDGER Gaffney, S. C., Saturday, July 9, 1927 JOHNSON BURGESS DIES SUDDENLY ON THURSDAY ___________________ Farmer and Textile Operative Expires at Home of His Daughter Johnson B. Burgess, 66-year-old-farmer and textile man, died suddenly at 4:45 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. B. Bolin, with whom he lived on the National Highway a short distance south of the city limits. He had not been confined to bed, but his health had been giving away for some time, it was stated. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at the Corinth Baptist church by the Rev. R. I. Hoke, the pastor, and burial will follow with the Shuford-Hatcher Company, funeral directors, in charge. Mr. Burgess was the father of the late N. S. Burgess, who was foreman of the mechanical department of The Ledger office for almost 20 years before he fell a victim of influenza during the epidemic about 10 years ago. He is survived by two sons, W. C. Burgess of route 5, and June Burgess of Shelby, N. C., and the following daughters in addition to Mrs. Bolin; Mrs. Etta Kirby, Mrs. Lola Littlejohn, and Mrs, Irene Pruitt, Bessemer City, N. C. and Mrs. Annie Wyatt, route 4. Three half brothers and 3 half sisters also survive. Actually, at least 4 of Johnson's half sisters and all 4 of his half brothers survived him. Josephine's date of death has not been established and Charles Freeman was apparently unknown to his South Carolina siblings.
