a. Note:   n Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.
  A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Forest and Emmerline Self Burgess.
  He was a member of Putman Baptist Church and a retired employee from Torrington Co.'s Tyger River plant. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
  Survivors include his wife, Marguerite Lawson Burgess of the home; a daughter, Annette Grogan of Buffalo; two sons, Terry and Jerry Burgess of Buffalo; a sister, Evelyn B. Lawson of Buffalo; a brother, Lawrence Burgess of Buffalo; and six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.
  Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Putman Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Donald Tillman and Otis McCluney. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is at the home, where it will remain until the hour of service.
