Continued: There is no futher record of this Joseph Burgess. Jane L Burgess, age 35, appears in Spartanburg Co in 1880 with 2 children, Barnett Burgess, age 7 and Elzie Burgess, age 3, in the household of Isom Reaves and Sarah (Sallie) Waldrop, recorded as sister-in-law. In 1900, George Burgess, born abt 1875, is a boarder in the household of Isom and Sallie Reaves. (This may be the George Burgess who is a grandson of Thomas L Burgess.) Just a few houses away is William Fletcher Burgess.
Lucinda Jane Waldrop eventually married Willie C Alexander and had a child, Milton U (Utah/ Eutaw) Alexander. Milton Alexander took in the children of Elzie Burgess and Hattie Mims after Hattie's death.
John Barnett Burgess married Helen G McGregor about 1891. They had at least 2 known children, William Manley Burgess, born about 1892 and Ima J Burgess, born about Jan 1900. Ima Burgess died before 1910.
Elzie B Burgess married Hattie Mims about 1900. They had at least 4 known children, Lois J Burgess, born Mar 3 1901, died Jan 4 1965, who married Odell McLean Hovis. Lottie O Burgess, born about 1902. James William Burgess, born Apr 15 1903, died Aug 30 1940, never married. John Milton Burgess, born about 1907. Elzie Burgess died before 1910. Hattie Mims died before 1920.
It has not been proven that the Burgess Lucinda Jane Waldop married was Joseph. This is a guess. Joseph had a wife named Jane in 1870 so he is a likely candidate. Hopefully, his decendants will take the DNA test, which should narrow the possibilities.
