a. Continued:   There were 2 Josephs in the 1850 Union Co SC census. This Joseph is definitely the son of James Burgess. What is not so certain is which one served in Co B, 18th Regiment SC Infantry.
  A Joseph Burgess served with Comp B, 18th Regiment, SC Infantry. He was captured at Petersburg Jul 30 1864. He was tranferred to the prison camp at Elmira, NY Aug 12 1864 where he died on Feb 20 1865 of chronic diarrhea.
  This Joseph is unaccounted for in the 1870 and 1880 census. Nancy Perguson had 2 children born after 1870 who bore the Burgess name. Either these children were born out of wedlock or her Joseph Burgess did not die during the war.
