Note: John L. Burgess Mr. John L. Burgess, 77, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Oconee Memorial Hospital. Mr. Burgess was born in Murphy, N.C., and was a longtime resident of Seneca. He was retired from J.P. Stevens Plant in Seneca. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines and served in World War II in 5th Marine Division. He was wounded in action on "Iwo Jima" and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was the son of the late Walter and Lillian Murphy Burgess. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Beatrice McDonald Burgess; sons, Johnny and Dottie Burgess of Seneca, Hughlyn and Rita Burgess of Anderson, Tim and Vanessa Burgess of Anderson, Don and Kathy Burgess of Simpsonville and Rusty and Felicia Burgess of Seneca; daughters, Mickie and husband Mike Thrasher of Westminster; brother, Alton Burgess of Seneca; sister, Inez Morgan of Seneca; grandchildren, Michelle and husband Kevin Jenkins, Leslie Thrasher, Brandon Burgess, Johnathan Burgess, Hunter Burgess, Dusti Burgess and Alli Burgess; great-grandchild, Kori Jenkins. Funeral services for Mr. Burgess will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home. The Rev. Crawford Keese will be officiating. Burial will be in Oconee Memorial Park with military honors. Flowers are accepted and memorials may be made to donor's choice. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home of Hugh Burgess, 4011 Brackenberry Road, Anderson.
