a. Note:   Boyd Burgess is recorded in both the 1920 and '30 census record as an adopted son. His surname in the 1920 census is given as "George". He may be a nephew of Sallie George. The Spartanburg Herald-Journal, Spartanburg SC, Jun 3 1945 T/SGT. BOYD BURGESS, who has been listed as missing in action since Feb 25 1944, has been declared killed in action, according to a War Department message received by his family. Sgt. Burgess was a radio man on a Flying Fortress based in England. He was lost in action somewhere near the French- German border as the Fortress was returning from a bombing mission over Augsburg, Germany. The War Department message stated that 4 of the bomber crew bailed out of the Fortress and were captured by the Germans. 6 crew members were never heard of again. His wife, Mrs. Virginia Laurens Burgess, has received the Air Medal with Oakleaf Clusters awarded pothumously to her husband. He is survivied by his wife, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Burgess of Moore, 3 sisters, Mrs. Warren Orr of Inman, Mrs. Shealy Hammett and Mrs. LaMar Knox, both of Spartanburg; 2 brothers, Jones Burgess of Spartanburg and Paul Burgess of Greenwood. His wife resides in Kershaw.
