Note: W. Mack Burgess, Spartanburg William Mack Burgess, 63, of 1228 Farragut Drive, Spartanburg, died Sept. 5, 1999, at his home. A native of Gastonia, N.C., he was the son of the late John Milton and Doris Reid Burgess. He was a 1955 graduate of Spartanburg High School and a 1967 graduate of Wofford College with a Degree in Sociology. He was formerly employed with the Spartanburg Water Systems, prior to that he was employed by Roebuck Builders and began his career in Human Resources at Hoechst Fibers. He was a member of Morningside Baptist Church where he was a choir member, deacon, and former Sunday School teacher. He was presently serving as Director of Sunday School and chairman of the 50th Anniversary Committee. He had served as chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee. He also served four years in the U.S. Naval Security Group. Mr. Burgess was a former member and past-president of the Spartanburg Lions Club and was former District Governor. He was Lion of the Year for 1984-85 and was awarded the Melvin Jones Medallion from Lions International in 1986-87. He was also active with the United Way of Spartanburg and was a Mobile Meals volunteer. Survivors include his wife, Jackie Brown Burgess of the home; one daughter, Susan Elizabeth Burgess of Greenville; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Stewart and Linda Conn Burgess of Spartanburg, Patrick Hogan and Jill McGurk Burgess of Phoenix, Ariz.; one grandson, William Stewart Burgess II; two sisters, Sara Burgess Romney of Spartanburg, Linda Burgess Salditt of Philadelphia; three brothers, John M. Burgess Jr. of Chevy Chase, Md., Joe B. Burgess of Abbeville, and Raymond R. Burgess of Anderson. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Sept. 7, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.Funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Kirk H. Neely and the Rev. Robert C. Morgan. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens
