Note: n Columbia. A native of Kelton, he was the husband of Alma Rector Burgess of Columbia and son of the late Arthur and Ida Stines Burgess. He was of the Protestant faith and was retired from the Army and the City of Columbia. Survivors in addition to his wife include one son, Howard Burgess Jr. of Wagner; three sisters, Vivian Rochester of Roebuck, Shirley Horne of Fountain Inn and Marcella Smith of Jonesville; two brothers, Larkin and Bruce Burgess, both of Jonesville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Holcombe Funeral Home. Graveside services with full military rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rosemont Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Randy Smith.
