a. Note:   t his residence. Born November 15, 1942 in Hickory, he was the son of the late Arthur Harry Burgess, Sr. and Sara Doll Burgess. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Rebecca Deal Burgess. Arthur and Becky were childhood sweethearts and married on March 29, 1964. Arthur graduated from Hickory High School and the University of North Carolina. He was a lifelong Tar Heel fan, faithful member of the Rams Club, and served on the Morehead Selection Committee for years. He was also a Boy Scout and received the Eagle Scout Award. Arthur was a lifelong fourth-generation member of First Presbyterian Church. He was confirmed on April 5, 1953 and ordained as an elder on July 6, 1969 at the age of 26. He served many years as the Clerk of the Session as well as chairman of various committees. He was a founder of the Men's Breakfast Group, a historian of the church, a youth leader and a Sunday school teacher. He was a supporter of the local Hispanic congregation of Iglesia Presbiteriana Emanuel. Arthur served for many years on the Executive Council of the Presbytery of Western North Carolina and was a Western NC Elder Commissioner and the moderator of Budgets and Funding to the 204th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA in June 1992. Arthur's entire career was spent as a CPA for Arthur H. Burgess and Company, Hickory's first CPA firm founded by his father. He was a member of the Hickory Jaycees where he served as President and was named both Man of the Year and Boss of the Year. Arthur was also a longtime member of the Hickory Rotary Club where he served as President and received the distinguished Paul Harris Fellow Award. He served as President of the Hickory Chamber of Commerce and President of the Hickory Seahorse Swim Team. As well as being dedicated to his family, church, work, community, and alma mater, Arthur had a love for history. His primary passions were the history of the Presbyterian Church, his Scottish heritage, and the American Civil War. He was awarded Life Membership to the N.C. Presbyterian Historical Society. He is survived by his three children: Arthur Harry Burgess, III and wife Jackie of Carlsbad, N.M., Elizabeth Burgess Taylor and husband Zack of Hickory, and Catherine Burgess Hitchcock and husband Stephen of Hickory; six grandchildren: Jenna Loretz Burgess and Garron Arthur Burgess of Carlsbad, N.M., David Burgess Taylor, Catherine Barlow Taylor, Stephen Andrew Hitchcock, Jr. and Ella Brett Hitchcock, all of Hickory; one sister Elizabeth Burgess Frazer and husband Sidney of Brentwood, Tenn. Following a private graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery, a memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bobbi White of the N.C. Presbytery and the Rev. Heather Wood officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UNC-Chapel Hill, with a reference to The Arthur and Rebecca Burgess Scholarship, which was created to benefit need-based students in our area.
