Continued: The Spartanburg Herald, Spartanburg, SC, April 20 1940 UNION WATCHMAN DIES SUDDENLY Last Rites Planned Today for Gregory L Burgess * Excelsior Employe (Special to The Herald) Union, April 28-- George Luther Burgess, 64, watchman for the Excelsior Mills of Union, was found dead early this morning in the yard of a house near the mill. Investigating authorities said that death was due to natural causes and that he apparently dies about 12:15 a. m. while en route from his work at the mill to his home on Sprouse Street. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence on Sprouse Street at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon bt the Rev. J. ?. Sparks and the Rev. J. H. Howard of Columbia. Interment will be in Gilead church cemetery, near Jonesville. Active pallbearers will be the following nephews: Elzie Burgess, Joe Burgess, Lewis Burgess, Russell Burgess, Arthus Burgess and Lawrence Blakely. Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Alice Comer Burgess, one daughter, Miss Sarah Burgess of Union; two brothers. Thomas Burgess of Union and Jim Burgess of Pacolet Mills; and three sisters, Mrs. Edward Robinson of Pacolet , Mrs. Grover Richards of Whitney, and Mrs. Jim Blakely of Union. The Edgar funeral home of Union is in charge of funeral arrangements.
