Note: Herman Walker | LOWELL - Herman Francis Walker, 84, passed away May 13, 2012, at his home. A native of Gaston County, he was a son of the late Connie and Lottie Burgess Walker. From 1947 to 1954, he was a well known duck-pin bowler and Asst. Mgr. of Recreation Bowl in Gastonia. He won numerous tournaments around the country. In 1949, he and Ed King won the NC State Doubles Championship in Winston Salem, NC. Herman was named on the Honor Roll two years in a row by the National Duck-Pin Bowling Assoc. in Washington, D.C. He was a former long line truck driver for Akers Motor Lines, and retired from Consolidated Freightways. While employed, he served as a shop steward for 18 years for Teamsters Local Union #71 in Charlotte, NC. He was a Life-Member of the National Rifle Assoc. Herman was a WWII Navy veteran serving aboard a Destroyer, the U.S.S. Power DD-839. He was a member of The National Assoc. of Destroyer Veterans- (Tin Can Sailors). He was a charter member of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, LA. and the Gaston County WWII Last Man Club where he served on the Honor Guard. Herman was a member of McAdenville Baptist Church and a for-mer member of Love Memorial Baptist Church for 42 years, serving as Deacon, Greeter and Usher. He was also a former member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Lowell, NC where he served as a Greeter and Usher. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at McLean Funeral Directors Founders Chapel. The Revs. Walt Griggs and David McMahan will offici-ate. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. prior to the service. Burial with Military Honors by the Gaston County Honor Guard will be in Gaston Memorial Park. Herman is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Betty Walls Walker, a son Jeff Walker of Gastonia, NC, a daughter Kelly Cheek and husband David, two grandchildren, Daniel and Allison Cheek all of Denton, NC, a brother, Ray "Bo" Walker of Bessemer City, NC, a sister Mrs. Shirley Queen of Gasto-nia, NC, numerous nieces and a nephew. In addition to his parents Herman was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Walker of Stanley and Gene Walker of Valdosta, GA
