Note: Martha B. Phillips Martha Burgess Phillips, 83, formerly of 1131 Wilcox Ave., passed away on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Peachtree Centre. Born in Cherokee County, she was the wife of Joe D. Phillips for 63 years and the daughter of the late Clarence Burgess and Eufalla Parker Burgess. She was a retired sales clerk, a graduate of Gaffney High School and a charter member of Cherokee National Golf and Recreation Club, where she was a member of the Cherokee Squares Dance Club. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Grassy Pond Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Terry Phillips of the home and Steve Phillips and wife, Christy, of Gaffney; one grandchild, Joey Phillips and wife, Emily, and one great-grandchild, Randy Phillips, all of Shelby, N.C. She was preceded in death by a son, Bruce William Phillips. Services will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. at Grassy Pond Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Lanford and Martin Hogg officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 6-8 p.m. at Blakely Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grassy Pond Baptist Church, 254 Grassy Pond Road, Gaffney, SC 29341; or Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 1886, Gaffney, SC 29342. The family will be at the residence, 1131 Wilcox Ave.
