Note: Edward Burgess, longtime Gaffney city councilman, is dead at age 76 Edward Sloan Burgess, 76, of 1232 N. Limestone St., died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born in Anderson, he was the husband of Ruth Sanders Burgess and was first married to the late Jean Becknell Burgess. He was the son of the late James Arthur Burgess Sr. and the late Marie Lipsey Burgess. Mr. Burgess was retired from Hoechst Fibers and was former owner and operator of Burgess Cash and Carry. He was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church and the Andrew Club at the church. He was a Gaffney City Councilman, a Mason, a veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 109. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Kim Burgess of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Gloria Baker of Gaffney; a step-daughter, Laura Lembke of Stanton, Va.; a step-son, Jay Lancaster of Waynesboro, Va.; a brother, James Arthur Burgess of Gaffney; two sisters, Jo Cash of Gaffney and Sarah Proctor of Kernersville, N.C.: three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Mr. Burgess was preceded in death by a brother, Connie Dean Burgess, and sister, Margaret Lipsey Bolin. Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Frank Northcutt, Dr. Clyde Thomas and Dr. James M. Brown. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Pallbearers will be Chuck Cash, Don Cash, Jerry Proctor, Roger Proctor, Larry Burgess and Mike Bolin. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Joe Pitts Sunday School Class and the Andrew Club. The family is at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, 805 Cherokee Ave., Gaffney, S.C. 29340; Connie Maxwell Childrens Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, S.C. 29648; or the charity of ones choice. Shuford-Hatcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
