 William Burgess served in Company I of the 62nd Regiment TN Mounted Infantry. Co I was formed Sep 10 1862 in Newport, Cocke Co TN. Together with the 60th and 61st Regiments, mustered into Conferderate service on Nov 11 1862 at Sweetwater, Tenn and placed in Brig. Gen. John C Vaughn's Brigade. Vaughn's Brigade was sent to MS where they engaged in several minor battles before falling back into the trenches at Vicksburg for the seige. One of those battles was at the Big Black River Bridge. Union forces captured as many as 1700 men and many more were killed, either in action or drowned while escaping across the river. Company Muster In Rolls show William Burgess present from Jan 1 1863 through Apr 11 1863. On Apr 11 1863, William Burgess was discharged due to "phthisis pulmonalis" an archiac medical term for tuberculosis. The 62nd surrendered Jul 4 1863 at Vicksburg. Survivors were paroled and reported to Brandon, MS Jul 16 1863. William's brother, Asberry, was reported among those who surrendered Jul 4 1863 and paroled.
 William Burgess' discharge papers state that he" was born in Union South Carolina; aged fifty-one years*; six feet, one (or none) inches high; dark complexion; black eyes; black hair and by occupation a farmer"......
 He was last paid on Dec 31 1862 and has pay due from that date to the present date. "There is due to him x dollars traveling allowance from x , the place of discharge, to x , the place of enrolment, transportation not being furnished in kind.
 There is due to him Sixty-seven dollars, seventy-five cents. He is indebted to the Cofederate States nothing dollars on account of anything .
 Given in duplicate at Vicksburg Miss this 11 day of April 1863." "For pay from 1 of Jany 1863 to 11 of April 1863, being 3 months and 11 days, at 11 Dollars per month----- 37.00
 Add compensation for clothing 67.75 Amount 104.75 Balance paid 104.75 " William Burgess signed this receipt with his mark. *William Burgess was recorded as 41 years of age when he enlisted. This age is consistant with census records.
  A "family story" from someone in the Owens family has William Burgess dying at home after his return from the war.
