Note: onaship between John and Emanuel has not been established. The most likely is that they were brothers, both sons of Joseph Burgess, although probably from different mothers. John Burgess claims to have been born in Hancock Co GA. Joseph Burgess appears in early Hancock Co GA tax and land records. Joseph Burgess appears in the Union Co SC census in 1820, the same year John Burgess makes his first appearance there. Joseph Burgess is the only male appearing in both places of sufficient age to be John's father. Other possibilities do exist, John could be a nephew, cousn or even much younger brother. John Burgess served in the War of 1812. He enlisted in Capt. Samuel Faucett's (Fossett) Company at Lipsey's Old Field in Union Co SC Oct 31 1814. The company was posted at Charleston, SC for the duration. By about 1812, John Burgess had married Sarah Frances Pruitt of Union District, SC. They appear in the Union District census of 1820 and 1830. In 1840, they are found in Buncombe Co NC. By 1850, they have moved to Cherokee Co NC where they remained. Sarah Frances Pruitt died before Mar of 1861 when he married Elvira Laughter Young. John Burgess died Dec 14 1882. John Burgess applied for a pension for his service in the War of 1812. He lists Hancock Co GA as his place of birth there and in the 1860 census. Hancock County was not formed until John Burgess was about 5 years old, but was probably his earliest memory. I believe John to be a son of Joseph Burgess, most likely by an unknown first wife. John identifies Germany as the place of his mother's birth in the 1880 census. A large group of immigrants from Germany and Switzerland settled in an area known as Dutch Fork in the mid 1700's. Dutch Fork was located between the Broad and Saluda Rivers from Columbia to the Newberry area of South Carolina. This area is just south of the Union District. It is very possible John Burgess's mother was part of this group. There are two unidentifed males in John Burgess' 1840 household. They are between 10 and 15 years of age (born from 1826/30). There are no males in this age catagory in John's 1830 household or his 1850 household.
