  There is a strong possibility that James Burgess is a brother to Emanuel Burgess. Circumtantial evidence includes the personal recollection of a descendant that he is related to WF Burgess, a grandson of Emanuel Burgess, but does not remember exactly how. Also, Lemuel Burgess, Emanuel's eldest son, is in the household of William Wallace Burgess, a grandson of James, in the 1910 census as a cousin.
 James Burgess appears on his own in the 1830 census of Union Dist SC, 3 families away from Elizabeth Burgess.
