Notes
a. Continued:   Emanuel Burgess was born about 1822, most likely in Union Co, SC. He is probably the son of Joseph Burgess and Elizabeth ___, although other possibilities do exist.
Elizabeth Burgess (abt 1787-bef 1860) was in Emanuel's household in the 1850 Union Co SC census. She is most certainly a relative of Emanuel, his mother being the most likely.
Emanuel married Jane Elder(s) by 1845. They had at least 9 children. Jane Elders last appears in the 1870 census with Emanuel and their children. She apparently died at least by late 1871. Emanuel then married Amanda J Williams (1851-1917), daughter of Harvey J Williams and Nancy Jane Orr. [There is no record of Emanuel and Amanda's marriage. Their only son was born in Sep of 1872. I estimate their marriage took place at least 9 months prior to that date.] Emanuel and Amanda Burgess moved with her parents to Walton Co GA sometime during 1872. Shortly after, Emanuel disappeared. According to a family story, he told an aquaintance that he had already been in one war and did not intend to be in another. Census records show that Emanuel returned to SC where he later married Rebecca Blake by mid 1873. Amanda Williams remarried Jan 1880. No divorce record for Emanuel and Amanda has been found. Since the exact date of Emanuel's return to SC isn't known, it is possible he did not know of Amanda's child. His children did not seem to know. Johnson Burgess's obituary mentions 3 half-brothers. Including Charles, 4 of Emanuel's sons were living at the time of Johnson's death.
Emanuel served in Co B, 18th Reg, SC Infantry during the Civil War. His sons, Lemuel and James, also served in this unit. Lemuel is recorded as being present and surrendered Apr 9 1865 at Appomattox. Emanuel and James are not in this record. James Burgess's widow later drew a pension for his service. If Emanuel drew a pension, it would have been before 1900 and those records have been lost. Lemuel died in the Confederate Soldiers Home in Columbia.
Emanuel last appears in the 1880 census of White Plains, Spartanburg Co SC. He died between 1888 and 1900. He is most likely buried at Corinth Baptist Church cemetery. Many of his descendants are buried there, including son Andrew, who is in a large plot with few headstones.
A large number of Emanuel's descendants still live in SC although some have left Cherokee Co.
