According to a book written in 1959 by Col. Pinckney G. McElwee, William McElwee I and II (b. 1718) were both born in County Tyronne, Ireland. The father of William I was born in County Ross, Scotland and was a member of Clan Ross. William II and brother, David, emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1759, and William later moved to Brunswick Co.(now Greenville Co), VA and then to Clarks Fork of Bullocks Creek in York District of SC. He died there in June 1807 and is buried in the Pisgoh Churchyard. William II and Janet Black had 8 children, James W., William III, John Calvin, Eleanor, Agnes, Ann, May and Elizabeth.

BIOGRAPHY: We go back to Scotland to find the earliest McElwee's. According to tradition the McElwees originated in County Ross, Scotland, where they were part of the Clan ROSS. About 800 A.D. there was a substantial migration of the McElwees from Scotland to Ireland were they settled in western Ireland in county Galway. Int eh year 1000 A.D. a McElwee was buried in the Cathedral Burial grounds at Belfast. Some McElwees remained in Scotland as evidenced by a ditty of Sir harry Lauder who sany: "I once had a bonnie wee lassie by the name of McElwee and I got verra fond of Mc and she of me". The father of those McElwees who came to America is buried in the old Presbyterian Cemetery of Londonderry, North Ireland. (2)
