15 Children Are Orphaned by Accident: Driver Took Wrong Road
Imlay City, Mich., Dec. 9, 1931. Three persons were killed and fourth was injured seriously when an automobile was struck by a Grand Trunk mixed train, two miles east of here, at midnight. The Dead: Mrs. Emma Proctor, Frank Siple, his wife Minnie. Mrs. Emma Proctor's husband, Arthur, is in the hospital here. The four were returning to their homes, about eight miles from Marlette, Sanilac Co., after a trip to Detroit. The automobile was thrown 50 feet by the train. The accident happened on a country road about half a mile from M-21, the highway on which the party should have been traveling. It is assumed the driver took the side road in the darkness, believing he still was on the State Highway. The Proctor and Siple families live on nearby farms. Mrs. Proctor leaves seven children from 5 to 20 years old, and Mr. and Mrs. Siple leave eight children from 10 to 26 years old. Mr. and Mrs. Siple found it necessary to go to Detroit in connection with settlement of the estate of Mrs. Siple's brother, August Bowsky, who died last summer. Proctor and his wife volunteered to accompany them, and the trip was made in Proctor's car. Proctor has two brother, George and Herschel Proctor living in Detroit.
The Huron Times Herald Paper 12-10-1931 Reports
Mr. & Mrs Siple and Mrs. Arthur Proctor, also of Laurel, were killed late Tuesday night on a country road two miles east and about one mile south of Imlay City when the car they were riding in was struck by a fast Grand Trunk freight train west bound from Port Huron. This accident happened at Killmurry's crossing at a deep cut. The high banks obscured their view of the tracks.
