  Dr. George Leroy Dowd, 86 passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2012. George was born October 25, 1925 in McKenzie, Carroll Co., TN. the son of Charles E. Dowd and Lillie A. Medlin Dowd. He was preceded in death by a half-brother, Wilie D. Dowd (Omar) and by his parents. Dr. Dowd is survived by, his wife of 65 years, Martha Maxine Epps Dowd, a daughter, Marilyn Louise Dowd, a half-brother, James W. Williams (Shirley), several brothers and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2012 at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. with a brief reception following the funeral. George loved life and lived it fully. He was blessed with a strong mind, body, and spirit. He was a faithful husband and friend, a devoted father and son. God has taken our best. We will miss you so. George was educated in the McKenzie Public Schools graduating in 1943. At the height of WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was accepted into their V12 Officers training program at the University of the South, Sewanee TN. He was then sent to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and Northwestern University, Chicago, IL. Upon the close of the war in 1945, George opted out of the Navy and back into private life. He completed his final semester before graduating from Union University, Jackson, TN with a BA in American History. It is there that he met his wife Maxine. He completed advanced degrees at the University of Mississippi, Oxford; a Master's degree in American History and a Master's degree in Higher Education. He completed his Doctorate there in 1956. His adult work career spanned 47 years. Dr. Dowd retired from the University of Memphis in 1994 after 31 years. He loved his home and decorating it, gardening roses, counellies and old English herb gardening. He collected stamps from an early age, enjoyed photography, classical and broadway musicals, was a passionate historian, loved traveling to all United States, and multitudes of foreign countries. In younger years he was an active mountain hiker and frequented the National Parks of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Western Canada. George was in many service clubs, Alumni associations, Church groups, and other organizations. A pleased descendant of the Pilgrim Fathers, he was a member of the Mayflower Society and an active genealogist. A devoted Christian, he and his wife were members of Raleigh Baptist Church (Bartlett Hills Baptist Church) for over 45 years. To say he will be missed is undeniable.
