Note: NOTE!!!! The only connection I have with this Carter branch is through REBECCA DOUD. Researched this line in hopes of finding her death date but did not. I have assembled this information but not verified all of it. Despite this being an old family, many of which were early Mormon converts, the lines have not been well documented. Their story is quite interesting and the book "House with a Past" by Erik Barnouw gives a good start to it. However, that book was published in 1992 and more information has become available since then. Town of Benson, Rutland County, VT "In the early subsequent years the following settlements can be traced : In 1786 John Barnes, John, Jonah and Jabez Carter, Deacon Stephen Crofoot, Jacob and Beaoni Gleason, both of whom were soldiers in the Revolutionary War." There is NO evidence that Jabez fought in the Revolutionary War. He was born in Connecticut and the only service I have seen atrributed to him was in Mass. which makes no sense. He did have two brothers who served but in CT. Year: 1790; Census Place: Benson, Rutland, Vermont; Series: M637; Roll: 12; Page: 257; Image: 186; Family History Library Film: 0568152. This aged brother was born in Killingsworth [sic] in the State of Connecticut, where the early part of his life was spent; he emigrated from thence to Rutland co., town of Benson and state of Vermont, where the fulness of the gospel first saluted his ears; he, like a true child of god embraced it with all his heart, and often expressed anxiety to come to this place before he died, saying that he should then be satisfied. Suffice it to say, that he came here in good heath, walked our streets with a firm step, viewed the house of the Lord, & then felt to express his satisfaction as did old Simeon when he saw the Savior, "now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace for mine eyes have seen thy salvation." He was taken suddenly and violently ill, lingered about 12 days and God called his happy spirit home.
