From a newspaper story May 1943
  Sixth Graders In Watch-Dog Role
Effie and Pop had better look to their laurels. The two chamber of commerce officials have formidable competition in the sixth graders at Los Gatos elementary school and in the class teacher, Mrs. Edward Teall, who is, incidently, Pop's sister.
Perusing "My Weekly Reader", a children's newspaper to which the class subscribes, the sixth grade boys and girls found an article dealing with the mineral output of the United States. All well and good. But when the article stated right out loud that these States produce no mercury, the outraged pride of the young Californians knew no bounds. (Except by teacher's discipline.)
As every Los Gatan knows, mercury is produced in northern California and it wasn't so long ago that the quicksilver mines at Almaden were contributing to the supply. The class voted that their class secretary, Gloria Yee, should write to "My Weekly Reader" editor, stating such facts.
And this week the sixth graders are in receipt of a return letter from editor Daisy Grenzow, acknowledging the paper's error; thanking the class for its helpful interest; and stating that a correction will soon be published. The paper is published in Columbus, Ohio.
