Note: Selma was born April 2, 1871 at Arnes burg, Germany and according to her obituary came to the United States in 1901. She married Alfred (Alfonse) Koltze in 1904 and lived in Pingree, ND for 50 years. When Germany declared war, they took in her sister Ida's daughters, her nieces, Helen (in 1913) and Marie (in 1915) from Germany to work in their boarding house and hardware store. The work was hard and the Koltze's were not pleasant people. Marie and Helen moved out as soon as they were able. Marie's daughter, Blanche, remembers that they had no children, and that their cats were the love of Selma's life. . When she and Alphonse retired, they moved to Arkansas. At some point Selma moved to Kansas, and then back to ND about 5 months later. Selma was in Valley City, ND at the home of her niece, Mrs. Ed Feuerherm, a few months before her death. She died at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, ND Sunday January 4, 1959 at the age of 87 and was buried at Woodbine Cemetery in Valley City later in the spring. At the time of her death she was survived by her 2 nieces, Marie and Helen and 2 nieces in Germany. Her funeral was held Tuesday 2 PM at Oliver's Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. A.G. Schilling. According to the Ellis Island records, a single, 27 year old Selma Espich from Spandau,Germany (it's own city then, now a district of Berlin) arrived 4/1/1899 on the ship Patria, which departed from Hamburg, Germany. Don't know if this is the same person.
