Note: Alphonase L. Koltz was born December 10, 1859. He served in the army during the Indian Wars and worked his way north from Missouri. He had been shoeing horses and setting wagon tires while in the service. He was an early settler in Pingree, arriving from Illinois in 1903 and opened a hardware,implement and feed mill business and gave a first class blacksmith shop (Pingree Patriot, Nov 18, 1915). He was active in various businesses and had farming interests. His "Little Store" was known for miles around. Especially during the war years,one could buy many necessities there which were not available to other stores. He was a competitor of George H. Piercy, who also ran a hardware store. Al also ran the adjacent motel. He married Selma Espich, they had no children. The Pingree newspaper mentioned several times how Al planted lots of trees every spring. It was mentioned that the road to Jim Lake was on Koltze land, and that on the lake there was an area called Koltze Park. He and Selma retired and moved to Arkansas where he died.
