a. Note:   Karl Christing was born 1866 in Saxony, Germany (according to 1930 US Census for Pingree).
  He married Ida Espich and they lived in a 5th floor apartment in the heart of Magdeburg, the capital city of the state of Saxony, Germany. Karl was a shoemaker and made shoes for the theatre people. Even though they were poor they were dressed well because that was necessary for appearances. However, there was never enough to eat. Often a meal was a slice of bread spread with lard. The Christings couldn't afford to raise all their children, plus the war was coming, so the 2 eldest girls, Helene and
 Marie, were sent to Ida's sister Selma's in America (Pingree, ND).
