SHOOTS SELF AFTER FAILING TO KILL WIFE: Sylvester Simon Escapes Arrest by Putting Bullet Through Heart
WIFE SERIOUSLY WOUNDED: Case Starting in Summit Divorce Court Ends in Double Tragedy
Mrs. Mary Simon, 30, 1342 Andrus St., is lying in City Hospital at the point of death, the result of being shot twice late Saturday evening by her husband, Sylvester Simon, 38, of 769 S.High St., and who later shot and killed himself.
The police received a call shortly after 10 o'clock Saturday evening that a shooting affair had taken place at the Andrus St. address and that a man was seen to leave the house with a revolver in his hand. Officers arrived at the place, found Mrs. Simon on a bed in the front room with two bullets in her body. An ambulance was called and she was taken to the City Hospital.
Officers Bollinger, Petras, McMinamin, Wunderly and Williams began searching for the man who had left the home after the shooting. The search lasted late into the night when the trail led them to 769 S.High St. Search through the rooms brought no result but the officers leaving the place by the back way discovered the body of a man, later identified as that of Simon, shot through the heart. In his hand was clasped a revolver. The body was taken to Sweeney's morgue.
According to the police, Simon and his wife came from Western West Virginia and had been having trouble ever since living in Akron. Several weeks ago, it is said, Mrs. Simon applied for divorce. Simon then left his wife and rented a room at 769 S.High St., where he shot and killed himself.
Neighbors say that Simon called on his wife Saturday evening and the two quarreled over her refusal to let him come back and live with her.
The Simons had no children. Two brothers and one sister in West Virginia were notified Sunday morning of what had happened, and requested to come to Akron immediately.
  (Independent Tues 9 July 1918):
"SIMONS, LEE, Haleville: Son in law of J.N. Butcher committed suicide in Akron, Ohio. Was brought here for burial Tuesday. Interment in Macphelah on Wednesday."
I found his birth at familysearch.org with no name listed in the index, but parents listed as Jacob H and Mary C Simons.
