Note: Source: "The Record Delta", page 3, Monday, August 4, 2003: Geneva I Mearns, 83, of French Creek, died at 8:03 AM on Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at her home. She was born in Holly Grove on Jan. 19, 1920, a daughter of the late James Howard Hanline and Etta Simons Hanline. On Feb. 26, 1944, she married Harold A Mearns, who preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1987. Ms. Mearns is survived by one daughter-in-law, Diane Nelson Mearns of Alabama; one grandson, Howard A Mearns of Star City; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by one son, Max Kent Mearns, and one infant sister. Mrs. Mearns was a homemaker. She graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School in 1938 and attended Glenville State College, and taught school until her marriage. She was also a bookkeeper until she retired. Mrs. Mearns was a Methodist by faith. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 16th, at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Marple Chapel Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the memory of Geneva Mearns to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N Michigan Ave., Suite 1700, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
