Simons receives 2002 Upshur County Farm Bureau annual Distinguished Service Award
Buckhannon--Robert Stanley Simons of Upshur County is the male recipient of the 2002 Upshur County Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Award. Actively engaged in agriculture for more than 75 years, Mr. Simons has been a member of the Upshur County Farm Bureau for 46 years, and is past president. Simons holds a BS in Agriculture Economics from the University of Arizona, receiving several distinctions while a student, including the Butler Trophy for highest point average on the livestock judging team. He later went on to earn his Masters of Science from WVU, and taught vo-ag in Upshur County Schools for 23 years. Known as a pioneer in Upshur County agricultural circles, Simons utilized artifical insemination to create Charolais cross-bred cattle from registered Herefords. He was among the first in the county to use a round baler. He operated a cow/calf operation for many years, converting to a steer backgrounding operation in 1988. From that time on, he produced 200-400 head of steers each year, essentially as a one man operation. Retiring at the age of 79, Simons sold his farm and with the proceeds established vo-ag and forestry scholarships at WVU. He also provided operating endowments to WVU and the University of Arizona for their livestock judging teams. Simons is a charter member and past president of the Upshur County Lion's Club, and a past president of the Upshur County Education Association. In 1965, he was the livestock judging winner at the WVU Sweepstakes Roundup, and in 1995 was recognized as the Upshur County Conservation Farmer. He is a member of the Irwin Steward Society at WVU and a member of the President's Club at the University of Arizona.
SSDI gives his DOB as 9/21/1917. This is wrong.
