a. Note:   William Lawrence "Bud" Sheppard, 87, of Stanley, North Carolina, formerly of Rock Cave, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, in Stanley, North Carolina.
  Mr. Sheppard was born in Wirt County, on Sept, 23, 1923, the son of the late Offa Wilburn and Ida Jane Simons Sheppard.
  Mr. Sheppard was also preceded in death on July 6, 2008 by his wife of 61 years, Ruth E. Arnold Sheppard, whom he married on Sept. 23, 1947; a brother Ralph W. Sheppard; and a sister, Darl McKown.
  Surviving are his children, Richard L. "Larry" Sheppard of Iron Station, North Carolina, Reva Rhyne and husband, Sonny, of Stanley, North Carolina, Darleen Kay Cooper and husband, Randy, of Iron Station, North Carolina, and Steven B. Sheppard and wife. Julie. of Iron Station, North Carolina; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brother, David L. Sheppard and wife, Betty, of Buckhannon; and sister, Ilene Nixon and husband, Karl, of Buckhannon.
  Mr. Sheppard served in the United States Navy during World War II in the amphibious forces in the Southwest Pacific, where he was a 2nd class boatswain mate on a landing craft. After WWII, he drove buses for Greyhound and the U.S. Post Office and worked for the Division of Highways as a parts truck driver. Later in his life, he did carpentry work, specializing in trim and cabinets and retired doing that. In 2000, he sold their home in Rock Cave, (Gaines) and moved to North Carolina to be closer to his children, but his heart and soul belonged to West Virginia. Mr. Sheppard enjoyed traveling back to West Virginia to visit family and friends, watching and reading western movies and books, hunting, playing poker, camping, being outdoors, and buying, selling and trading. Mr. Sheppard was a Christian by faith.

  The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at Tomblyn Whitescarver Funeral Chapel, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Brandon Kelley officiating. Interment will be in Buckhannon Memorial Park. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3663, American Legion Post 7 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapters 5 and 36 will provide military funeral honors at the graveside.
