Note: Ruth Elnora Sheppard, 82, of Maiden, N.C., passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008, in Hospice of Catawba Valley, Newton, N.C. She was born March 13, 1926, at Suncrest, the daughter of the late Clayton Milton Arnold and Rhoda Bennett Arnold. She is survived by her husband, William Lawrence "Bud" Sheppard of Maiden, N.C. Also surviving are four children, Reva Rhyne and husband, Sonny, of Stanley, N.C., Richard Lawrence "Larry" Sheppard, Darleen "Kay" Cooper and husband, Randy, Steven Sheppard and wife, Julie, all of Iron Station, N.C. Seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one stepbrother, Jim Simons of Salem, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Sheppard was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Arnold; and two sisters, Kathryn "Kay" Hicks and Geraldine "Jerri" Riffee. She was the last member of her immediate family. Mrs. Sheppard was a native of West Virginia and resided in Rock Cave prior to moving to North Carolina to be close to her children. She worked as a cook in the Upshur County schools for 17 years before retiring to care for her mother. She was a Baptist by faith, attending Hills Chapel United Methodist Church in Stanley, N.C., and Macedonia Baptist Church in Denver, N.C., with her children as her health permitted. She loved life and found happiness in being surrounded by her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards, bingo, quilting, crocheting and singing hymns. Her "mountain alto" will be missed. Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, from the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in the Buckhannon Memorial Park.
