Notes
a. Note:   unsourced unknown author of tree on ancestry.com http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=*v50t2512&id=I0143 says he was born in Essex county, VA and William Noel was a soldier in the North Carolina forces of the Continental Army, participating in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in 17---, at which he was wounded and left for dead on the battlefield. After the war he settled in North Carolina and had five sons. Afterwards he removed to Anderson County, TN (Clinton County Seat, northwest of Knoxville). His eldest son John married a Miss Wiley (reported elsewhere as Miss Kimbrough) and moved to Virginia, probably to Hanover County. He was probably John R. Noel who owned the land in Hanover County on which the present town of Noel is situated. William Noel's name appears on Muster Roll, Salisbury Dist. N.C. according to State Auditors Dept. report in 1896 (Robin's note, should this read 1796?) He was 2nd Lieut. under Gen. Joel Brevard according to Colonial and Rev. War records on file in N.C. William also had two daughters: one married Alfred Monroe and the other Robert Garnett.
