Bickett, brief mention of whose death at his home in Mt Ayr July 13 was made in the Record-News last week, were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 0clock at the Rhodes Funeral Home, being conducted by Dr. Jesse Johnson, pastor of the United Presbyterian church. The funeral was largely attended by neighbors and friends who came to pay the last tribute to one of the few remaining heroes of the Civil War and one whose exemplary life in the community for a period of nearly half a century had endeared him to all. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery, where a salute in honor of the departed was fired by the firing squad of the American Legion and taps were sounded by the American Legion bugler. Arthur Hill Bickett was born in Butler, Pennsylvania, April 20, 1846, and departed this life on July 13, 1932, aged 86 years, two months and 23 days. At an early age he came with his parents to Illinois and a new home was established on a farm at Sunbeam, Illinois. Shortly after his 17th birthday he enlisted as a private in Co., A, 138th Illinois Infantry Volunteers, being a student at Monmouth College, Monmouth Ill., at the time. After his discharge from the Union Army in October 1864, he attended school in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, for a time, returning to Illinois to engage in business at Monmouth. On February 20, 1873, he was united in marriage to Martha Jane Paxton at Aledo, Ill., where they established their home. To this union were born three sons and one daughter. In 1878, accompanied by his wife and mother, he came to Mt. Ayr, Iowa and since made this his home. Two of his eldest sons preceded him in death, dying in infantcy. He is survived by his wife Martha Jane Bickett; one daughter, Mrs Lila Triplett, Arriba, Colo.; one son, John F. Bickett of Aledo, Ill.; a foster-daughter, Mrs. C. G. Stranahan, of Mt. Ayr.; and one granddaughter, Barbara Jane Bickett. Mr. Bickett was a member of the United Presbyterian church of Mt. Ayr; and of Ellice C. Miller Post No. 96, Grand Army of The Republic. In passing a very large circle of neighbors and friends feel a deep sense of personal loss. Sympathy is expressed on all sides with the near relatives, and especially with the wife who was at his side for nearly sixty years, and who faithfully cared for him in his declining years. Card of Thanks For the kindness of the neighbors and friends during the illness and on the occasion of the death and funeral of our husband and father we extend our hearth felt thanks. Mrs. A. H. Bickett and family.
