Co., Antrim, Ireland-April 27,1893, New Zealand) John Ballance, the eldest of eleven children of Samuel and Mary Ballance, was born in a cottage site next to the restored house at Glenavy on March 27, 1839. He served in the Maori War of 1867 and in 1875 entered the House of Representatives, joining the Liberal Party, Minister of Lands and Native Affairs 1884-1887 and made his reputation in the spheres of the economy and land use. He held office as Colonial Treasurer (1878 ), as Minister of Lands, Native Affairs and Defence (1884-7) Leader of the opposition 1889 and Prime Minister [1891-3]
