CHAPTER X III HISTORY OF BUTLER Co., PENNSYLVANIA DURING THE WAR OF 1861-65 ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SEVENTH REGIMENT Because this chapter is an extensive roster of military personnel, the surnames have not been included at the front of the chapter. The following abbreviations have been made use of in compiling the several rosters: e ., enlisted; dis., discharged; disab., disability; m., mustered in service; m.o., mustered out, m. o. w. c., mustered out with company; m. o. w. b., mustered out with battery; wd., wounded; m. wd., mortally wounded; nat. cem., national cemetery; P.V., Pennsylvania Volunteers; pro., promoted; Surg. cert., Surgeon's certificate; tr., transferred; vet., veteran; V.C., Volunteer Cavalry; V.I., Volunteer Infantry; V. R. C., Veteran Reserve Corp. This regiment was recruited, principally, in the counties of Butler, Bradford, Crawford, Clinton, Schuylkill and Wayne, and of its ten companies, Companies D, F and G, were composed of Butler Co., men. The men of the regiment rendezvoused by squads and companies, at Camp Curtin, and on the 22nd of August, 1862, a regimental organization was effected by the choice of the following field officers: Henry M. BOSSERT, of Clinton Co., Colonel; Joseph B. KIDDOO, of Allegheny Co., Lieutenant Colonel; and Charles W. WINGARD, of Clinton Co., Major. Soon after its organization, or September 1, 1862, the regiment was ordered to Washington D. C., and upon its arrival, reported to Gen. CASEY. It went into camp near the city, and during its brief stay the companies were drilled by officers from the neighboring forts. On the 6th of September, the regiment began its march toward Antietam, passing through Rockville and Barnesville, and on the 12th, it joined Hancock's Brigade, Smith 's Division, of the Sixth Army Corps. At Crampton's Gap, in the South Mountain, the corps came up with the enemy, and the regiment was here for the first time under fire, though not in the front line. After crossing the mountain, Col. BOSSERT was ordered with a detachment made up of the different regiments of the brigade, to proceed in the direction of Harper's Ferry and establish a line across the valley to guard against surprise from that direction. The rest of the regiment was assigned to the charge of the wagon train. As the battle of Antietam opened (September 17), Co l. BOSSERT drew in his detachment and rejoined the brigade in the field. After assisting to bury the dead on the field of Antietam, the regiment marched to Bakersville on the 23rd, and remained there on guard duty until October 10, 1862. At this time, however, the rebel Gen. STUART, with a strong force of cavalry, was making a raid into Pennsylvania, and the brigade then commanded by Gen. Pratt was sent in pursuit. The men were aroused from their sleep at midnight and put upon the march, and no halt was called until they were some distance north of Hagerstown. The pursuit was fruitless, though, and the command went into camp near Hagerstown, where it remained until October 18. The regiment (being the only nine months' regiment in the brigade) was then ordered to the defenses of Washington, and, marching via Boonesboro and Frederick City, Md., reached Washington on the 20th of the same month. At Washington, an excellent opportunity was given for drill and discipline, which was studiously improved. When the Union army under Gen. BURNSIDE reached Fredericksburg, Va., the regiment was again placed in the field, and marching down to a point opposite Acquia Creek, crossed the river. Here Col. BOSSERT was placed in command of the post, with a brigade composed of his own regiment, four regiments of New Jersey troops and one from New York, and was charged with the duty of guarding the landing and the railroad leading to Fredericksburg. The regiment remained on duty here until BURNSIDE opened his second campaign (January 20, 1863), when it was ordered to the front and assigned to the Third Brigade, First Division, First Army Corps. Gen. PAUL, in command of the brigade and Wadsworth of the division. Upon the abandonment of the campaign, it went into camp at Belle Plain. Under COOPER, in a campaign which opened on the 27th of April, the regiment moved out with the corps, and crossing the Rappahannock at Franklin's Crossing, under heavy artillery fire, took position on the south bank and built temporary earthworks. Here it remained exposed to a violent fire of the enemy's artillery until the night of the 1st of May, when the corps was ordered away to Chancellorsville, where the main body of the army was in position, and where the premonitions of hard fighting were strongly marked. Accordingly, it recrossed the river, marched to the United States ford, passed the stream, and after having just encamped for the night near its banks, was suddenly aroused and moved to the front, on the extreme right of the line, the Eleventh Corps having in the meantime been routed by the army of Stonewall JACKSON. There was no further serious fighting on this line, however, and three days after, on May 6, it returned with the army via Falmouth, to Acquia Creek. On the 25th of May, the term of enlistment having expired, the regiment was ordered to Harrisburg, Penn. That city was reached May 27, and, on the 1st day of June, 1863, the One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers was formally mustered out of service.
