Note: Andrew James Harter and his family lived in Edgefield County, S.C. where he was a school teacher and farmer. His name appears as Andrew or Andrew J. in all the official papers I have found but family knew him as James Andrew.
John Chapman's book, History of Edgefield County, South Carolina, lists Andrew Harter as a private in the Florida Campaign of 1836 (2nd Seminole War). Three Regiments, 7th, 9th, and 10th, of volunteers were raised in the Edgefield District. Andrew was listed as a private in the 10th along with these recognizable names: (all privates) Wesley Barnes, H. Culbreath, West Culbreath, William Culbreath, and John Perry, Jr.
