a. Note:   Enlisted at age 16 as a Private in the US Army (Allen's Company) in 12/14/1776 without his father's consent. Served in the Second North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Line (War of Independance). Promoted to Corporal in Feb1779. He was in the Battle of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth and the Siege of Charlestown in 1780 where he was taken prisoner by the British and taken to the Werst Indies and later to Nova Scotia where he was held all winter and then set free. He then went to Richmond Co., Nova Scotia for 7 years and then to Hawksbury, Nova Scotia where he lived and raised a large family as a poor farmer and fisherman for the next 60 years. He was still residing in Hawksbury in 1846 at the age of 85.
  John's pension application was challenged and eventually denied. It was questioned why he remained in Nova Scotia, never returning after the war ended. His answer was that he was prevented by extreme poverty and later by family obligations.
