Notes
a. Note:   H70
Note:   Uriah is one my my brick walls. If anyone has specific info or clues linking him to parents or siblings, please let me know! Thank you.
1795 - Uriah born in North Carolina During this period there are from 500 to 600 Jones families in North Carolina. No later documents indicate what county Uriah was from or his father's name. There is a John living nearby in 1820 in Jones Co., GA, who may be a relative.
Note: According to Red Book the GA census records previous to 1820 did not survive. There are tax lists that can be used as substitutes, plus the 1805 GA Land Lottery has almost all heads of household.
1818 - Uriah marries Mary Trice in Jones Co., GA
1820 Census - Uriah is living in Jones County, GA, Captain Mulkey's District. He has one male under ten (that would be William, born in 1819), and one male between ages of 16-26 (that would be Uriah), and only one female between ages of 16-26. That would be Mary. He is engaged in "agriculture." There are about 22 other heads of household with surname Jones in Jones Co., but only one other in Capt. Mulkey's District: a John Jones, who has one male under 10 and one male 26-45 -- he is perhaps old enough to be a father to Uriah - or maybe is a brother; he has one female under 10 and 1 female 26-45. Note, listed under Uriah's name is Charlie Trice.
1821 -[note this may not pertain to this Uriah Jones] Land Lottery of Jones Co., GA, 1821. A Uriah Jones was one of the fortunate drawers. See copy of page in file for list of other Jones surnames, who may be related. However, need to confirm if this is "our" Uriah. It appears that Houston Co was location of some of the land lots; later there is another Uriah who lives in Houston Co., that is not "ours." (checking the Census records of 1830, there was a Uriah Jones in Houston Co. and "our" Uriah is in Harris Co. The Uriah in Houston may be the Uriah from Wake Co., NC who married Dicey Brown, a few months before our Uriah married Mary Trice in GA.
1827 -- Also in Georgia Land Lottery of 1827, on the May 11 drawing, one of the "fortunate drawers" was Uriah Jones; Captains District: Bowens; #39; district: 3; Troup County (not sure if this is our Uriah).
1828 -- From a copy of page 253 of "Family, Church, and Community Cemeteries of Troup County, GA", Troup Co., GA is a paragraph about the Bethany Baptist Church which "was constituted 8 Sept., 1828, by James Garrett, Lucy Garrett, Levin Collins, Catherine Simmons, Uriah Jones and Mary Jones. (However it appears to have been in Harris Co, third District in 1828 per History of Bethany Baptist Church).
1830 -- Census - Uriah is in Harris Co., GA; 1 male under 5 (Robert); 1 male 5-10 (James) 1 male 10-15 (William); 1 male 30-40; 1 female under 5; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 20-30. (Eliza may be one of the female children; not sure of other -- birth years not certain)
1830 - From 'History of Bethany Baptist church, Pine Mountain, GA, 1828-1978" - "charter members James Garrett and Uriah Jones are listed as heads of families in the 1830 census records of Harris County. Both served on jury duty, Jones in 1830... Mr. Jones and his wife left Bethany on December 3, 1836 . . .
1830 - From a copy of pages 25-26 of "History of Harris County, GA": "Harris County was settled largely by eastern Georgians--an intelligent, moral, and religious people. Early settlers came into this county (which is in the 25th Senatorial District, 3rd Congressional District, and the Chattahoochee Judicial District) from Pennsylvania, Virginia, North and South Carolinas. Many of the settlers were large storeholders, and were well supplied with all the requisites of planting. The best lands, therefore, were taken up in large plantations; the poorer ones were occupied by people of limited means. Harris, being a county of varied resources, was, like the neighboring counties, rapidly settled. In 1830, although not fully two years old, it had a population of 5,000. By 1850 there were nearly 7,000 whites and 8,000 slaves."
The History book then goes on to quote the Minute Book for the Superior Court of Hamilton, Harris County for March 1830, in which Uriah Jones is listed as one of the Grand Jury. (Also noted was the name Richard Shackelford, in case Uriah turns out to be from that family from VA/NC/GA)
1838 - Land transactions for a Uriah Jones from Troup Co., GA archives, but it is not clear if this might be another Uriah. In December 12, 1838, Uriah purchased from Nathaniel Dill of Cowetta Co., land described as North West Quarter of Lot N: Ninety in the Fourth District of Troup County. He bought the lot for $250 and on same day sold the same lot (if I'm reading correctly) to a William Hardrick for $600.
1840 -- Census for Chambers Co., AL: Uriah Jones is head of household: Under five, 1 male and 1 female; between 5-10, 1 male, 1 female; 10-15, 1 male, 1 female; 15-10, 1 male, 1 female; 20-30, 1 male; 30-40, 1 female; 40-50, 1 male, for total whites of 6 males, 5 female; there were 10 slaves.
1840 - An Allen Jones sold to a Uriah Jones (now of the county of Tallapoosa of AL) property in Troup Co., GA for $2,000, in Fifth District of Troup, lot #273 .
Again - not sure yet which Uriah this is.
1841 - On July 12, 1841, Uriah was awarded a land grant of 320 acres in Alabama by President John Tyler. This land had been formerly owned by Hi-yoke-che, a Creek Indian. Hi-yoke-che had been given the land by the United States government by virtue of a Treaty which was signed March 24, 1832. (Apparently as the Creek Indians were forced to leave Alabama and move out west, they had to relinquish all the land that they had formerly owned.) [found this info on ancestry.com in Land Records - Alabama; Patentee: Uriah Jones; Land Office: tallapoosa Dist.; document #: 158; Title Authority: Creek Treaty; Signature: Y; signature date: 1841/07/12. Later Janet Sherling sent me a copy of the "State of Alabama-Chambers Co Tract Book" showing this grant in Township 20 North; Range 27 East; St. Stephens Meridian; Uriah was in section 26; received 320 acres on 7/21/1841 under treaty of 1832 from the "Hi Yoke-Che 'fund'.
1846 - In January of 1846, Uriah sold that lot #273 (see 1840) to Gideon H. Jones for $1,000. Uriah resided in Tallapoosa Co., and Gideon resided in Troup Co. None of the documents mentions that Uriah-Allen-Gideon are related.
1850 -- Census for Chambers Co., AL (taken from "the People of Chambers Co., AL, Vol II): Uriah is head of household, 55 years old; a farmer, 14 slaves, real estate value of $3,000; born in NC. Wife Mary is 47 years and born in GA: daughter Mary A., 16, GA; Lucinda, 14, GA; Thomas, 12, AL; Margarett, 10, AL; Frances, 4, AL.
1855 -- State Census, Uriah is listed as having 1 male under 21; 1 male over 21; 3 females under 21; 1 female over 21; for a total of 6 white people; with 27 slaves.
1860 -- Census for Chambers Co., AL, has Uriah as head of household; age 66; farmer, real estate value of $4,000, and a personal value of $35,000; born in NC; he has 22 slaves. Wife Mary is 56, born in GA; son Thomas is 22 years old, born in AL, and is an overseer. Frances is 13 years old and attends school. {according to 1860 slave schedule, Uriah has 22 slaves]

"Early Settlers 1830-1850 by Mable c. Ross, Ridge Road- Rural Route One by 1896" - Chambers/Russell Co., shows the location of Uriah Jones property near Liberty Baptist Church. (Another source indicates this church is on U.S. Highway 29, 6 miles NE of Opelika)
