Note:   Welborn (Webb) married Clara S. Bargainer. They lived at 316 N. Ross Street in Auburn, where their only child, marie, was born. They later built a house at 258 Opelika Road, just across the street from George A. Wright, a neighbor. George recalled that the site of Welborn's house used to be a cotton field. he said he used to pick cotton there at 40 cents a hundred when he was young. (This house has since been torn down to help provide ground for a new post office.)
Welborn was appointed postmaster of Auburn by President Woodrow Wilson, and served as postmaster for eight years. At that time there was no house to house delivery. Anyone who wanted to receive mail had to have a mail box in the post office and had to go there to pick it up.
According to another neighbor, Mrs. Nelda Huff: "Welborn was so sweet and nice to people; a generous and caring person. He loved children and he and Marie would take my children with them to the ball games. Both Miss Clara and Mr. Welborn were so dear, gentle people. They loved plants and flowers and gardens, and had green thumbs. They gave all the neighborhood beautiful flowers and things from their garden."
Welborn operated a small general store on Main Street for many years. He was very prominent in local politics, serving on the Lee County Democratic Executive Committee for some thirty years before retiring as the chairman because of ill health. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was on the Board of Trustees from 1948 to 1953.
His wife, Clara, died in 1942 after a brief illness.
In 1958 Welborn shot himself in the head and died in the Lee County Hospital on July 19, 1958.
He is buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Auburn, Alabama.
