Note: H91 Note: Walter (Will) grew up on the family farm in Opelika but later moved to Tampa, Florida. he and his wife lived on a small island just across the bay from Tampa. It was called Seddon Island. They were the only people living on this island at the time. His wife sold real estate in Tampa. Comments by DJG: Today, this small island is called Harbour Island and it is a prominent tourist attraction. It houses the Tampa Convention Center, a luxury hotel, office buildings, the Athletic Club, trendy new stores, and luxurious houses and condominiums. This is the island where Queen Elizabeth II docked her yacht, HMS Britannia, when she visited Tampa in May 1991 to see General Schwarzkopf and to honor him with a knighthood. Walter worked for a railroad and his job was to check the freight cars as they came in carrying phosphate. One day while checking trains, he got caught between two moving freight cars. He was killed instantly. it is said that they couldn't find even the pieces of him afterward. Helen Jones from Atlanta, Georgia, was working as a nurse in a hospital in Tampa when Walter's widow came in for treatment. She said that Walter had bought a new hat just before his accident. Before he left for work that morning, she had said to him, "Dad, if you don't come back, I'll sport your new hat for you." And he never came back. 1900 Census - Walter is living in Macon, Bibb Co., GA. He is "head" of household and living with him is brother Luther.
