Notes
a. Note:   H68
Note:   Thomas is listed with his father Uriah in the 1850 Census for Chambers Co., AL. Thomas is 12 years old, born in AL.
  In the 1860 Census, he is living with Uriah, and works as an Overseer (Uriah has 22 slaves and obviously a large farm). Thomas is 22 years old; born in AL.
  {Although he was mentioned in his father's estate papers, and said to reside in Chambers Co., AL then, 1863, Thomas did not appear to be at the estate sale with the rest of his family, who are listed as purchasers of items -- I see no indication to support assumption that Thomas inherited the whole plantation. He did receive money in the form of [gold-?], bankbills and confederate currency, which was noted as being worthlesss. Ah, he is shown in other papers as having purchased the South West quarter described in the file.}
  1870 Census - the people were listed mostly by initials only, and they were hard to read. I'm sure this is Thomas' census. He is married at this time to Amanda, and has two children, who are listed. One is 3 and the other is 4-1/12 - or 4 months - which matches his children. His job at this time is as a Clerk in some kind of store (D.O.B.- ?)

  The following are notes written by Dorothy Grohe:
  "Thomas Jones apparently inherited the family land and property from his father, Uriah, and became a farmer. Thomas married a girl from Georgia, Amanda Vondamon, around 1866. She gave birth to four children: Thomas, Clifton, Byron, and Welborn. After the birth of Welborn in 1874, Amanda died a few years later. It is unknown where she is buried."
  "Thomas married Alice (Allie) E. Lockhart around 1878. Allie gave birth to four children: Walter, Luther, Pearl, and Henry. The census report of 1880 lists Thomas as a farmer, wife Allie as keeping house with children: Thomas, Clifton, Byron, Welborn, and Walter. They moved to Auburn around 1884. They gave birth to their last child, Nina Lee, in 1888. Nina only lived five years before dying. Her tombstone reads: "In this little grave, world wide hopes are buried." Two years later Allie died in 1895 at the age of 48. She is buried in the family plot at Pine Hill Cemetery. Inscribed on her grave-stone is: "Kind angels watch her sleeping dust."
  "Thomas then courted Maria Hortense McElhaney. She was born in Alabama, the daughter of Dr. Frank G. and Amelia McElhaney. Thomas and Hortense were married on December 24, 1896. By the year 1900, Thomas was still farming his own land and only one child was living with them; Pearl, who was then eighteen years old. Thomas was a member of the Baptist Church. Sometime later, Thomas stopped farming and became the owner and proprietor of the Hotel McElhaney, which he later changed to the Jones Hotel. The hotel was located at 131 North Main Street in Auburn. Hortense died in 1913 at the age of 57 and she is also buried in the family plot in Auburn." {Note: In April 2001, I asked for an on-line look-up in a book titled "Historic Alabama Hotels and Resorts", but there was no mention of this hotel under either name. vjc}
  "Thomas died on June 14, 1914 at the age of 76, after a brief illness. Surviving him were his six sons: Clifford, Byron, and Welborn of Auburn; Walter of Tampa, Florida, and Luther and Henry of Macon, Georgia; and also his daughter, Mrs. Pearl Cree of Salem, Alabama. The pallbearers at the funeral were his six sons."

  In the Census or Enumeration of Confederate Soldiers Residing in Alabama 1907; Lee County, Alabama Courthouse records: "Thomas Alexander Jones Auburn, AL. b. July 25, 1838 at (Chambers Co), AL. Private, 9 April 1862, at Loachapoka, AL in Co. D, 47th AL Regt. Surrendered at Appomatox, VA April 9, 1865."
  1910 Census Soundex: Thomas A. Jones was head of household, age 71, living in Lee County, Auburn, Alabama. Residing with him was wife Hortense, age 47, and daughter Pearl, age 25. Listed at the bottom of the card was "+3Bo, 3 Se" My guess - since he owned a hotel - is that it means 3 boarders & 3 servants. (Vol 68, ED 168; sheet 14)
